In today's post, we’re looking at foods that soothe an upset stomach when you're hungover. Can mangos help? How about fish? What about non-alcoholic drinks? We’re talking about all that and more.
 

1. Non-alcoholic drinks 

Alcohol is a known diuretic. This means it drains water from your body in the form of urine. As a result, you feel dehydrated after a while. Many people make the mistake of drinking alcohol to quench their thirst after the initial effect of booze kicks in. 

But they’re only making things worse. Water has electrolytes that help contract muscles and control your nerves. With low electrolytes, it becomes difficult to maintain the pH of your body. The stomach acids also cause nausea.

A dehydrated body requires water. Before you get drunk, remember to sip on some water between every alcoholic drink. You can also drink beverages rich in electrolytes. These include coconut water and sports drinks, which are both tasty and refreshing. 

Sports drinks come in so many flavors. If you’re a party person, stock your fridge with unsweetened sports beverages. Coconut water has natural sugars that help you maintain your blood sugar. Have a glass of one of these drinks before you go to bed. 

You can also have some ice chips to avoid dry mouth. Some people also drink pickle juice in the morning to get rid of the buzz, but there is no scientific backing for this.

2. Salmon 

After a night of too much drinking, you usually wake up to a throbbing headache and nausea. This makes breakfast a challenge. You want something that can keep you from collapsing. 

Having 6 to 8 oz of the salmon fillet can help! I know it seems crazy to eat salmon after a hangover, let alone for breakfast. But it works, people! 

Salmon is filled with high amounts of Vitamin B6 and B12, which are known to decrease inflammation in the muscles. It’s also rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, which can prepare your brain for the day ahead. 

There are so many ways to have salmon for breakfast. You can add it to your avocado toast, or eat it with scrambled eggs. Just avoid deep frying. This can destroy the vitamins and nutrients in it. Oven baking or grilling the fish is perfectly fine. 

If you think you’re going to be too tired to cook in the morning, try cooking some the night before. You can leave it in your fridge before you go out. 

All you have to do the next morning is heat it up. This is also good to take with you to work. If you’re allergic to fish, have no fear! You can always do Omega-3 supplements instead.

3. Fruits 

Natural foods have a special ability to alleviate hangovers. Fruits like mangos and bananas block a hormone that causes water loss. They help level up electrolytes like potassium and sodium, helping you cope. 

They’re the powerhouses of so many other electrolytes as well. Both the peel and the pulp of the mango decrease plasma alcohol levels after consumption. Watermelon can be a delicious snack and has more than 90% water. 

You can juice it, or have it cubed or sliced. This fruit can rehydrate your system and increase blood flow to the brain. A compound called L-Citrulline increases the blood flow. This is how it can rejuvenate when you’re dehydrated. 

Blueberries can give you a blast of anti-inflammatory compounds when your muscles are sore. A study showed that there was a marked increase of inflammatory compounds after people drank booze. A cup of blueberries can come in handy to combat that nasty hangover. 

Oranges and other fruit can keep hangovers at bay. Freshly squeezed orange juice also works fine. Rich in vitamin C, oranges help keep your body from losing antioxidants. Glutathione is one of them. Tomato juice is something very few people seem to enjoy. 

But a few chemicals in tomatoes can help safeguard your liver from the damage that alcohol causes. It's a great beverage to kickstart your day. If you’re unable to pick one fruit, just chop all these fruits up and toss them in a bowl for a fabulous fruit salad. 

Don't sprinkle any sugar or sweetener on it. It's literally the best detox breakfast for your overworked liver. If you want to drink your breakfast, blend them together to make a smoothie. This is much better for you than a morning coffee. That’s only going to create more acidity and nausea.

4. Bland Foods 

I know, you’re probably wanting us to elaborate right about now. There are several foods that can help you to get a grip on your pounding head and aching stomach. These include carb-rich foods like rice, toast, and applesauce. 

They quickly lift you up by providing instant energy. Having a few crackers can also be helpful, as long as they don’t have preservatives. A lot of people go for bread when they’re too hungover. Some will eat it plain right out of the bag. 

If you’re going to do this, make sure you toast it first. Even tired people have enough energy for this. But don’t do just any toast! Go for wholewheat. It’s a much healthier option than regular white toast. 

Hangover symptoms can all be reduced by eating bland foods. Protein-rich foods help to reduce surges in blood sugar. Remember to add a piece of salmon to your lunch to equalize the sugar. You can also try having a bowl of cereal from your pantry first thing in the morning. 

Oatmeal has so many vitamins, nutrients, and minerals that can perk you up. You can snack on dry cereals if you’re not ready for dairy. It helps people with sensitive stomachs. When your liver is busy processing all that extra alcohol, it has no control over your blood sugar level. 

That’s why people with diabetes experience a drop in their blood sugar when they drink too much. These people need to eat carb-rich foods ASAP. Do you remember the times you ate applesauce as a kid to fix an upset stomach? Applesauce is easy on the stomach and can reduce the gastric symptoms of alcohol. 

You can even put a little over your cereal. Rice is another fantastic option for your upset stomach. It doesn’t matter if it’s plain rice or fried rice. 

Some people also find comfort in noodle soup. College may have been the last time you ate ramen noodles, but it’s still good for your stomach all these years later. This is because it’s loaded with carbs. 

These are not exactly conventional hangover foods, but they can still help replenish your sodium and water levels. You can also try giving a zing of miso sauce to the soup and ramen. They also have some awesome amino acids like cysteine and taurine. This helps clear out the booze that’s still in your liver. They’re loaded with glutathione. 

Your body requires this chemical to break down alcohol and remove it from your system. The sooner alcohol leaves your system, the sooner you will feel better.

You won’t have as much of an urge to throw up. It will help you sail smoothly through those rough vomiting patches. Your liver is the organ that decides the toxicity level in your body.
